About the Publisher (ASSOBRAFIR)

The current Associação Brasileira de Fisioterapia Respiratória, Fisioterapia Cardiovascular e Fisioterapia em Terapia Intensiva (ASSOBRAFIR) was founded on September 2, 1986, in Olinda, Pernambuco, under the initial name of the Sociedade Brasileira de Fisioterapia Respiratória (SOBRAFIR). The organization was established during the 3rd Simpósio Internacional de Fisioterapia Respiratória (SIFR), a scientific event created by physiotherapist Dr. Carlos Alberto Caetano Azeredo in 1983.

"ASSOBRAFIR was born thanks to the fighting spirit of our colleague Azeredo. He was the brain, the spirit, the drive", summarizes fellow physiotherapist Dr. Hilda Angélica Iturriaga Jiménez, another pioneer of Respiratory Physiotherapy in Brazil. Both had been working in this field since the 1970s (he in Rio de Janeiro, she in Minas Gerais). In the early 1980s, Dr. Carlos Azeredo organized the Center for Studies in Respiratory Physiotherapy, the embryo of the future association.

With the creation of what was then known as SOBRAFIR, SIFR became the institution's main scientific activity. Each symposium reflects the association's growth and, most importantly, the development of its respective specialties. At the 7th SIFR, held from July to August 1994 in Salvador, Bahia, the organization awarded the first professional specialist titles in Respiratory Physiotherapy to a group of 11 professionals through a proficiency exam.

New competitions were held at SIFR events until 2010 to award the specialist title. Beginning in 2012, the exams began to be endorsed by the Conselho Federal de Fisioterapia e Terapia Ocupacional (COFFITO). In addition to Respiratory Physiotherapy, recognized in 1998, the Federal Council later regulated two additional specialties linked to ASSOBRAFIR: Intensive Care Physiotherapy (2011) and Cardiovascular Physiotherapy (2015).

In 2009, the journal "ASSOBRAFIR Ciência" began publication. The following year, the institution launched the PROFISIO update program, resulting from a partnership with Artmed Panamericana Editora. Having used the acronym ASSOBRAFIR since 2006, the organization changed its name in 2022 to encompass and strengthen the specialties it represents, becoming the Associação Brasileira de Fisioterapia Respiratória, Fisioterapia Cardiovascular e Fisioterapia em Terapia Intensiva. Increasingly close to its members, ASSOBRAFIR is headquartered in the capital of São Paulo and currently has 20 Regional Units (Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Federal District, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraná, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Sergipe) and six Representation Centers (Alagoas, Amapá, Paraíba, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins).
